New Year, New AI Anti Drone Missile Systems

OpenAI x Anduril & more

I think its every second week I end up writing about OpenAI. But that also checks out with the fact that it is one of my favorite companies. Another one of my favorite companies is the miltech company Anduril, but when I found out that they are collaborating, excitement was only my second emotion…

For those who don’t know, Anduril is a military technology company that is building high tech weapons like drones, missiles etc. (actually some super interesting stuff, Here’s their website if you want to check them out). But TBH even my first reaction to their partnership with OpenAI was WHAT THE ABSOLUTE AI APOCALYPTIC FUCKERY IS THIS??? Even though Anduril has been doing autonomous stuff before, the current trend of “reasoning” that OpenAI has been doing feels like something we should not be adding to weapons right now. OpenAI rules used to state that the technology could not be used in any military applications. They have changed those rules to include specific military applications. The current partnership only includes collaboration on the anti drone technology of Anduril and in the press conference they did say that “[Open AI] technology may still not be used to develop weapons, or to harm people or property”. They followed this by stating “partnership complies with the company’s rules because it is narrowly focused on systems that defend from unmanned aerial threats”.

The trend of utilizing AI in military technology is both not new and not against the larger industry trends. Computer vision systems have been used in military applications for a long time and other AI companies like Meta and Anthropic have also changed their rules to allow military use cases.

While I feel like this blew up mostly because people know Anduril mostly form mass manufactured missiles and OpenAI’s turn towards reasoning models, I feel like this is still a somewhat big deal. I’m not 100% sure even myself what to feel about this, but I do realize that someone will at some point do this anyways and it might as well be these 2. Either way, excited to see if we die in an AI apocalypse, get stuck in post AI capitalistic dystopia or manage to ascend to multi planetary demigods with the help of AI

Take care and happy new year!

Exciting news

Anduril x OpenAI deal

Just wanted to also highlight this paragraph from the launch post:

“The accelerating race between the United States and China to lead the world in advancing AI makes this a pivotal moment. If the United States cedes ground, we risk losing the technological edge that has underpinned our national security for decades. The decisions made now will determine whether the United States remains a leader in the 21st century or risks being outpaced by adversaries who don’t share our commitment to freedom and democracy and would use AI to threaten other countries. “

OpenAI releases the first peak into O3

O3 is the new flagship model that OpenAI announced before new years. Their scores on code and math (both typical and competition tasks) was unreal.

The other unreal fact is the price tag for running these models rn. One task for the top level of O3 costs 2000$+ While this is probably not optimized, its still crazy.

The price for running O3 does explain why OpenAI created the 200$/month ChatGPT pro subscription. If I was running a company right now, I might be up for paying even more to get unlimited access to O3. If you start to compare the 200$ per month to the salary of a junior developer, it starts to feel super cheap.

Also I loved these frogs that chilled on the table on the stream:

Hostaway just shy of a unicorn valuation

The Finnish startup Hostaway has secured $365 million in funding, elevating its valuation to $925 million. Hostaway is a vacation rental software startup and they’ve seen some hockey stick growth in 2024. Since their last funding round in 2023, they over 10x their revenue and are now using the newfound cash to expand their business especially in France Italy and Spain and to develop some AI driven functionality.

Congrath Hostaway!

Your weekly read

Or technically weekly check this out.

Put a finger down if you have…

  1. Started a side project only to totally forget about it in 2 weeks

  2. Lacked motivation for a project that you did alone

  3. Social pressured yourself to do a task that you wanted to do (e.g. telling your friends you’re going to the gym to make yourself go to the gym)

If your answer to even 1 of these was yes, we might have an interesting proposition for you. We’re doing a 6 week builder program for people that want to try out or build out their side projects. Its all online, so you can participate from anywhere in the world.

The idea is that we wont teach you how to make music, apps, short films, businesses or such, (since all that is 1 google or chatGPT query away) rather we’ll give you the accountability to try it out for 6 weeks and introduce you to other people that also enjoy building stuff!

The Founders Fuel has already almost 500 people reading, and if you’re interested in these types of news, chances are that you would benefit from trying to build out something of your own. If this sounds at all interesting, check us out at:

Ps, if you are thinking that “Well this seems cool, but I don’t have any ideas”, grab one from here:

Last words

Oh and if you have any friends that love tinkering around etc, link Sidequest to them as well!
